Casa Xelaju (CX), a social responsible Spanish school in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, was built on trial and error with visions of a better future for Guatemala and to bring an international awareness of Guatemala’s political, social, and cultural situation. The seeds of the Spanish school were sown in the midst some of the worst years of the nation’s civil war in the 1980´s, when the army was carrying on a campaign to destroy villages and towns in the highlands of the country in a time when tourists were a rarity in the country. Since its founding in1987, CX has been determined to realize three missions: provide the best education possible for students, create a positive labor relation with its teachers providing a decent salary with full benefits and to fight poverty through education with its La Pedrera Community Project.

CX has achieved its mission by means of the 40 Spanish program offerings, the most offered by any language school in Latin America. Among this cultural institute's programs are the choice to study and learn Spanish in Guatemala, Spanish classes for adults, children, high and college students, online through Skype, internship and volunteer work. CX also offers a wide range of Spanish test preparation for Spanish and Bilingual teachers: OPI, FSI, DELE, PRAXISII among other Spanish test preparations.

It organizes a wide variety of daily activities such as hiking volcanoes, dance classes, cooking and weaving lessons, visits to local markets and weekend trips to other towns and cultural centers. Lectures on the social, political and cultural situation of the country are offered along with educational movies and documentaries from the Spanish speaking countries.

Furthermore, CX is the only school in the country which is accredited by two universities in the USA for those students who wish to study abroad in Guatemala or would like to receive college credit in Spanish and Hispanic literature. These universities are Brookhaven College in Texas and Seattle Community College in the state of Washington. CX’s curriculum is in alignment with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages which helps CX to determine the academic level of each Spanish student upon entering the program.

With over 10,000 alums from all over the world, CX has made its mark in the country and in the Spanish speaking countries as one of the most established and successful language and cultural institutions. This status has been solidified by its rating of A+ by the Better Business Bureau; the only A+ rating in Guatemala.

Colonial Quetzaltenango is a beautiful city that does not have a high concentration of tourists like Antigua, Guatemala. As a result, students have more opportunity to interact with the local population and participate in Guatemalan life. It has a rich history and is often referred to as Guatemala’s cultural center and most progressive city in part due to the number of universities found there.
