Registered Nurses are in high demand. Improved training methods have led to their being sought after in hospitals, insurance companies, chemical companies, and even law firms. The option for working as a medical researcher or consultant is also available for registered nurses. Unfortunately, even though there are over three million registered nurses in the country, the US has suffered from a shortage of nurses in the last decade. It's predicted that this shortage is not going to get any better in the years to come. As attractive as the position of a registered nurse currently is, the position is not attracting enough new entrants to meet the ever-increasing demand for their services.

For the most part, registered nurses have a primary responsibility of helping doctors take care of patients. Nurses determine what patients need, maintain medical records, pass out medications that have been prescribed by a physician, and monitor patients' conditions. Equipped with a higher level education and intensive training than a traditional registered nurse, nurse practitioners can assume the role of doctors in diagnosing symptoms, prescribing drugs, and treating a patient. Others work as lecturer-practitioners, teaching nursing courses.

Registered nurses or all training levels will come across a variety of illnesses and injuries and work with people of all ages. Some nurses will take specialized classes that will allow them to work with a certain segment of the population. Surgery, maternity, pediatrics, neurology, geriatrics, emergency, and sports medicine are just a few branches of the medical profession where they can specialize.

Anyone can fall sick. Thus the scope of nursing covers a wide range of people from different sections of society. In particular, nurses are needed in medical facilities, clinics, community centers, schools, and even in patients' homes.

One way you can prepare for nursing is by taking classes in chemistry and biology in high school. This will assist you achieve high scores on your SAT or ACT examination, which will help ensure your acceptance into a good school. They will also prove beneficial during your degree program.

The minimum course you need to complete to become an RN is an associate's degree, which is usually accomplished in two years. Generally, the higher your degree, the more advanced your qualifications will be. This means that if you get a bachelor's degree, which requires four years of higher education, you will acquire advanced skills related to caring for patients and supervising other nurses. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission will need to have accredited the program you choose.

For those who wish to become registered nurses, there are four different educational programs. Master's degrees, bachelor's degrees, three-year diplomas, and two-year associate's degrees all will qualify you as a registered nurse of varying degrees.

Once you graduate from your program, you will have to take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam which is the registered nurse licensing test. Every state in the country has their nurses take and pass this exam.

After you pass the exam, you will be required to renew your nursing license every now and then based on the requirements of the state you are working in. If you are moving to a different state, you may need to take the exam again, depending on what the Nursing Board requires.

As a registered nurse, you may encounter difficulties finding the right job. You may also find that the responsibilities associated with your profession can be pretty overwhelming. If a rookie reporter ruins a news story, he’s not physically harming anyone. If a nurse ruins a patient’s treatment, serious consequences can occur. Even after you complete your education, you might not get a job right away due to a lack of experience and the importance of the work. Don't get discouraged. To improve your patient care skills and your job possibilities, start gaining the experience employers are looking for. Sign up as a volunteer nurse for clinics, non-profit groups, or any other place that is in need of assistance. You can also volunteer in international medical missions in developing countries. Most of the smaller missions will accept you fresh out of school, but the larger ones will probably want at least some experience.

Anyone who feels the need to assist people who are sick or injured should take steps to gain the skills required to become a nurse so those compassionate characteristics can be put to good use. Work hard to complete all of the necessary components and apply your skills to your nursing career.
