One of the oldest known carpets was referred to as a fresco handloom which was discovered in 1953 in the land of Egypt. It dates from the 1480 B.C. In the year 1960, a rug woven in a Pazyryc was discovered in a Mongolian tomb which was frozen in hardy ice. The rug contains some weft and warp fibers and some knots called ghiordes which dates back to 480 B.C and is very similar of the present well valued and highly priced Persian rugs. For only as little as 200 years old in the United States of America (USA), carpet making is very young compared to other civilizations before. William Sprague of Philadelphia is credited to the first carpet mill in the year 1971 where he first opened a plant for carpet making. In the early 1800s various plants that focused on the production of woven carpet sprang up in the Middle Atlantic States and in New England. There is one plant that operated and manufactured carpets were in Little Falls, New Jersey until the year 1979 was the Beattie Manufacturing Company. A gentleman named Bigelow, Erastus or Erastus Bigelow reinvented and resurrected the industry of woven carpet in the year 1839. His brother, Horatio, built the company who produced all of it. The brothers named the company the “Clinton Company” after the DeWitt Clinton where they showed great fondness and admiration.
By the year 1850, their business was a success as their productions were tripled. The year 1845 was Erastus' year because he opened a second plant around Bigelow, Erastus' newly patented business that produced gingham, the generation's very popular fabric because of its brightly colored nature. The town where Erastus' plant stands changed its name to Clintonville because it grew tremendously because of the plant. Many people contributed to the company as eager and hardworking shop keepers and workers. After the plant was kept standing, rails were laid and Clintonville was a fruitful town. Erastus' hunger for innovation, advancement and development left him having 35 different and unique patents. In 1877, he introduced the very first broadloom carpet that we still know and prefer to use today. Erastus Bigelow is the father of the Bigelow Carpet.
In the year 1849, the development of the so called Jacquard Mechanism was introduced to the industry and the Clinton Company in Massachusetts started producing the so called “Brussels Carpet”. The powerful loom was then modified and revamped in a very low level to be able to produce the Wilton Carpet. After months of gaining mutual connection and trust with each other, the Hartford Company and the Clinton Company merged to form the Bigelow Company, or as what many people refer to as theBigelow Carpet.
The Bigelow Carpet or the Bigelow Company produced the world's finest carpets from the year 1849 up to year 1933. The company's carpets were largely favored by many socialites and were installed in highly prestigious places like the Whitehouse, St. Patrick's Cathedral and the very famous, Titanic.
