Get Your Gardening Planned And Ready To Go

Something you want to do after you decide that it's time for your very own garden is to determine the best place to put it. If space happens to be in limited supply, your options will be more limited. Picking out the ideal garden spot depends on the amount of sunlight the area receives, with the best option being exposure from the south. Unless you have no choice, stay away from northern exposure sites as they are of little use for a general garden.

Whenever your garden lies where it will get sunshine all day with southern exposure, the vegetables need to be planted in north and south facing rows. Doing the work this way allows the morning sun's rays to get to the eastern side of the plants, and in the afternoon, the western side. Having this type of setup will prevent your plants from dipping more to one side. On the other hand, should your garden face southeast, you'll want to be certain that your rows run northwest and southwest to get the most benefit from the sun.

If at all possible, the sunlight needs to be uniformly distributed for the maximum available time. Seeing a window plant that has lopsided growth is an instance of what happens to a plant when the light is not evenly distributed. Once you know precisely where you will place your garden, sketch out a drawing of where you want each plant to go. Once you begin your garden, the garden soil will no doubt be topped by sod or trash. You need to furrow the ground and turn the sod under if you will have a large garden, whereas all you need to do is remove the sod if the garden will be fairly small.

The grass may be taken and put into a heap to rot as a compost pile, to be used as fertilizer. During the summer months of you can add green vegetable debris to your compost pile, and in the fall you can contribute your piles of raked leaves. You can then make use of this compost as fertilizer for your backyard garden the next year. You must eliminate any large clumps from your garden location by thoroughly plowing the sod under. Seeds are not going to mature correctly unless the ground is comprised of small particles. For getting your garden spot in form you must have a spade, a hoe, and a rake.

The spade is very useful for turning the ground but it will not get rid of the clumps. A hoe will be helpful in doing away with the remaining clumps and will better prepare the soil. Using the spade is going to be vigorous, hard work, but using a hoe and a rake will not be that vigorous. After you have completed working with the hoe, take the rake and smooth out the garden bed. Once you have this all done, you are ready to start planting the seeds.
