6-S07 The Universal Genius of William Shakespeare
Peter Lutzker
Professor an der Freien Hochschule Stuttgart
Kursbeschreibung
There is no author in all of world literature who has been as significant for as many individuals and cultures as William Shakespeare. For over four hundred years his plays have continually been performed all over the world. What makes his characters so universal and timeless? In this seminar we will explore this question primarily through working in groups on different scenes from the plays and thus entering into and embodying some of his greatest characters including Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet. At the same time, we will also look at some of the vital factors that led to these works being created at this time. The course will be conducted in English, but advanced English skills are certainly not required. All that is necessary is enthusiasm about working on drama and an interest in exploring Shakespeare's plays.
